Product FeaturesEvery home gym needs a great set of dumbbells. Whether you’re simply trying to tone up, or you want to gain some serious muscle mass; a good set of dumbbells is critical for building upper body strength or muscle mass. One of the best things about dumbbells is their versatility. They can be used for a wide variety of exercises, and they work for any fitness level. A good set of dumbbells can grow with you as you get more fit and it can be used by several family members of different fitness levels.
In general, there are some things you should always look for in a set of dumbbells. You’ll first want to decide whether you want fixed weight dumbbells or variable weight ones. Fixed weight dumbbells work well for those who just want to tone up a little, or have a specific weight in mind to lift. However, a more flexible set of weights is more versatile for the person who wants to push themselves to greater and greater strength.
Storage is another consideration in dumbbells. They aren’t particularly attractive pieces of equipment, so they need a way that they can be stored easily, unless you have a room dedicated to being a home gym where they don’t have to be seen. You may also want to consider weights with a neoprene or other coating, so that they don’t damage your floor if they’re dropped.
This set of weights from Cap is a good starter set for those who want to gain strength by being able to move up in weight as they get stronger. The set includes:
In addition, this set features comfortable handles with ergonomic grips, and rubber trim collars. The plates are cast iron and have a semi-gloss finish, and are rust free. The collars are threaded so that they stay secure on the handles.
This is a great starter set for anyone beginning a weight lifting routine, and it will serve you well as you gain strength too. The storage case makes keeping the weights out of sight quick and easy. It also makes taking your weights with you a breeze, since the case measures just 20 inches long by 9 inches wide.
This is a great set of weights for a family with varying abilities and fitness goals. You can lift as little as 5 pounds, (which is what the bars themselves weigh) which is perfect for women who want to tone up or who are beginning weight trainers. But, because you can go up to 40 pounds, it’s also great for the intermediate trainer. Some users have reported outgrowing the 40 pound maximum capacity of the set rather quickly.
But, that brings us to what we like best about this weight set. Though it comes equipped to go up to just 40 pounds, it’s easy to add pounds whenever you’re ready. You can easily purchase additional plates from the manufacturer as you gain strength. So, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever need to purchase another set of dumbbells.
You can simply add plates as you need them. In fact, the plates and bars are standard enough, that it’s likely that many standard weight plates will fit them. Serious weight trainers might want to just go ahead and order some extra plates along with the initial set.
To keep the bars from getting too crowded as you add plates however, it’s a good idea to buy extra ten pound plates so that you get more weight in less room on the bar. Keep in mind, however, that additional plates will not fit into the storage case, so you will need to come up with a storage plan as you start to add plates to your set.
From a quality perspective, these weights are very good. The plates are made from cast iron but are smooth finished to prevent rust. If you take care of them they are likely to last a lifetime. The carrying case is not as high quality. In fact, several purchasers of the set reported the case being dented upon arrival. The case is likely simply not made of a sturdy enough material to handle the weight of the bars and plates for a very long time.
From a price perspective, these weights are a great value. There are plenty of weight sets on the market that are much pricier, especially if you start considering truly adjustable weight sets. If you don’t mind taking a minute to remove and add plates to get the weight where you need it, this set will do everything a $500 set of adjustable weights will do – and for a price of around $40.
Several users of this product complained of a gasoline smell to the bars. They are coated in a sticky/oily substance, which is likely applied to make the plates slide off and on more easily. Some users reported not liking the smell of the substance and it taking a long while to wear off. Keep this in mind if you’re highly sensitive to smells.
It’s always a good idea to shop around for weights, especially when buying them online, simply because they can be quite expensive to ship. However, online retailers will sometimes offer free shipping, and it pays to wait for such an offer to save money. The other alternative, of course, is simply buying the weights at your local sporting goods store and carrying them home yourself.
All in all, this set of weights is a very good value, especially for the beginner. Anyone starting a serious workout regimen is going to outgrow the 40 pound limit within a couple of months, so plan on adding extra plates pretty early on in the game. However, for the price, the ease of storage and the variety of weights; the Cap 40 pound dumbbell set is a very good buy.
